Three Steps to Letting Go

Sometimes we need to let go to make space for what’s next

A simple framework to help you release what’s no longer serving you and create space for what truly matters.

If you want to design a life aligned with your values and the things that truly matter, there’s one step many people avoid:

Letting go.

It’s not easy.

People have expectations of us.
We build habits that feel comfortable - even when they no longer serve us.
We hold onto roles, identities, and commitments long after we’ve outgrown them.

But without releasing what’s no longer aligned, there’s no space for what’s next.

In this article, I’ll share a simple framework to help you free up that space—so you can move forward with clarity and intention.

1. Understanding (and Releasing) Attachment

We all become attached to the patterns we’ve created.

Our brains crave routine. Familiarity feels safe. So, we keep doing what we’ve always done even when it no longer reflects who we are or what we want.

So how do you know what needs to change?

Your body often knows before your mind does.

Take a moment to reflect on your current commitments - one by one - and notice your physical response:

  • Does your chest tighten?
  • Do you feel resistance or discomfort?
  • Do you feel drained just thinking about it?

These are powerful signals that something may be out of alignment.

But letting go isn’t just a practical decision - it’s emotional.

You might:

  • Feel responsible for others (“I’m the one everyone relies on”)
  • Fear letting people down
  • Stay loyal to situations that no longer work
  • Hold onto an identity you’ve outgrown
  • Avoid change to escape judgment from others

And here’s the important part:

If you stop something without processing it, you don’t release it - you suppress it.

2. Honouring What Mattered

Before you let go, take time to acknowledge what was.

If we don’t process our past, we risk repeating it.

Instead, honour it.

  • If you were always the one giving, name it:
“I needed more than I received in this relationship.”
  • If you’re closing a chapter, ask:
“What did this season teach me about myself?”
  • If you’re growing, release the guilt that can come with it - especially when others say you’ve “changed” (as if that’s a bad thing).

Growth is change.

This stage is about:

  • Listening to your inner signals
  • Building trust in yourself
  • Replacing self-criticism with compassion

You made the best decisions you could with the awareness you had at the time.

That’s not failure - that’s evolution.

3. Choosing What’s Next

Once you’ve loosened your attachment and taken the meaning from your experiences, something important happens:

You create space.

And here’s the trap - many people rush to fill it.

Don’t.

Pause.

This is where clarity begins.

From this space, you can:

  • Redefine your boundaries
  • Protect your energy
  • Choose relationships where support flows both ways
  • Make values-led decisions in your work and life

Start asking:

  • What actually matters to me now?
  • What feels aligned - not expected?

You may even redefine success entirely.

Because when your life aligns with your values, something shifts:

Your nervous system relaxes.

You stop forcing.
You start choosing.

Final Thought

Letting go isn’t loss - it’s a conscious act of alignment.

When you release what no longer serves you:

  • You reduce stress
  • You reconnect with yourself
  • You create space for something more meaningful

And most importantly - you begin to move forward with intention.
